We do not know whether the sesame plant comes from Africa or India, but it was already 5.000 years ago in China. The Chinese burned sesame oil in order to obtain soot for ink manufacture.
Sesame oil is used in margarine, for frying and for seasoning. In Greece and Turkey the seeds are sprinkled on bread and on sweet and savory baked goods. Seed is crushed to an oil-containing paste, which is known as tahini and serves inter alia as a basis for humus. Make tahini mixed with lemon juice and garlic and hands it to hot pita bread as an appetizer.
