Long before the Spaniards arrived, the Mayans used allspice to embalm their deads. Christopher Columbus have shown a hand full of black pepper corns  to the inhabitants of the Caribbean island, which perhaps explains the name confusion.
The national drink of Jamaica is made from rum and allspice. In the kitchens of Europe Iist allspice is a favourite for desserts and festive baked goods, such as the famous British plum pudding, various cake and cookies. Allspice is used to insert and milled or wholly for chutneys.
